Make room for your SELF, Mama
Self-care post. You deserve a room, or even a space, that’s all for you. That’s as lovely as you are. Where you can close the door, or have privacy, to refill your cup.
This can be a craft room or a home office or a meditation area. Or your closet. Or a reading nook. Find a space and claim it.
Or, if you live in a tiny little duplex like me with no real designated space, you can carve out little corners of joy.
And adopt the mindset that this is a sacred space to restore and celebrate YOU.
See, this post is really about boundaries and how it’s OK to say no to the demands of everyday life, the busyness of the family dynamics, and the “performance” piece of making the main living spaces presentable when guests arrive.
For me, after my baby was mobile, I declared our small bedroom to be an adult-only space. (Only in terms of the aesthetic—don’t worry, we still have regular snuggles, storytime, hide and seek, chasing games in here!)
I no longer store a bin of toys for my son. I removed the pile of books I had let accumulate by my bed. His straw cups and snack wrappers no longer linger. I reclaimed my space. It’s a shared space with my wife, of course, who was on board with having our bedroom be just for us.
It’s also the most minimal and, in my humble opinion, beautiful space in our home. This makes it the easiest to take care of.
We removed excess furniture that was landing spots for piles of stuff. We removed opportunities for clutter to accumulate by paring down excess furniture to only what we needed in this space. We bring intention into what comes into our room, and it sticks out noticeably if there is any type of clutter—so, it’s quick to clear.
It was important to me to have nothing under the bed—this is good feng shui, it’s good energy, and it’s easier for cleaning to slide that Swiffer allllllll the way under to collect the dog hair. This had to be negotiated with my bride who was content to leave her possessions there. It was important to me, so I stood my ground and offered other locations/storage solutions. I spoke up, I held my boundary, and I am so happy with that free-flowing space.
Also, I swear I sleep better.
This week, I worked on 3 home offices for moms. Three different women who have these beautiful rooms underneath the clutter. The FAMILY clutter. Husbands’ tools. Kids’ toys. Laundry. Holiday gifts for family members. Items belonging to friends or family that need to be returned. The family mail. Photos. So much paper. Paper everywhere.
I’m helping to clear the clutter, and also (hope!!!) I’m helping to empower these women to reclaim these spaces, to treasure this gift of self-care, and to help affirm their worthiness of such necessary spaces.
You deserve space, too, Mama.
